The Father
Age: mid 50's
Occupation: the father used to work in a managerial position at a furniture company. He has a workroom in the attic and hangs out there most of
the time. He likes reading the newspaper and building furniture in his
workroom. It is also his escape from work. He likes to have his own space when he needs to relax, so he typically doesn’t like people to
drop in.
Character: frowns, wrinkles, thoughtful-looking, and serious.
The
father devoted most of his life to work and providing for his family
until his retirement. The job in the furniture company was so stressful
that he used to take it out on the family by being a critical father
and husband. His belief that education will provide his daughter a
better life causes him to be strict with her. He wants his daughter to
have a more decent job than he does. Therefore, he has been a demanding
father with high expectations for his daughter. Because of his
harshness, his daughter, Cordelia is distant with him. The mother, the
gentler parent, naturally becomes the bridge of their relationship.
Cordelia, (goes by Delia in the script) the daughter

average height and weight, fair skin, restrained, soft
spoken, dresses in dark clothing,
pulls her hair up tight most of the time. Delia is neat and clean. She is organized with her
clothes and accessories. She
likes wearing nice clothes, but no matter how nicely she
dresses, she’s not confident in herself. Delia is submissive and also
incapable of rejecting people, quiet and not responsive (slow to talk)
She’s responsible and polite to co-workers. As a result, people take
advantage of her.
Delia invests most of
her time working and impressing people. However, her
relationship with Grant didn’t work out and he happens to be her supervisor in the law firm where she used to work.
Therefore, she resigns from her job. Although
Delia calls home to catch up with her family weekly, neither of her
parents knows she is unemployed. In fact, over the past five years since
she moved to the city from her parents’ rural home, her mother has been
the one she talks to. She’s always been reserved with her
father because she is not sure whether her father will embrace her true self.
The mother
Age: late 40's
Character:
benevolent, patient, active, talkative, short wavy
hair, wears glasses sometimes, dresses casually, grocery
shops twice a week, likes baking, working in the kitchen
most of the time.
The mother used to be restless over little things. She was treated harshly by the
father earlier in their marriage. However, her perseverance and positivity have made the marriage work. The mother married the father when she was twenty. She always believes in relationships and puts family first.
Grant
Age: in his 30's
Character:
tall, fair skin, dark hair slicked back. He comes across as a gentleman, but he's unassertive and inclined to avoid problems.

Delia. As a result, Delia had to move out of Grant’s apartment. Unable to remain professional in her work, Delia resigns from her
job.
